New Frontier in Africa

After the excellent performance of Mexico, Volkswagen trucks and Buses opened a second foreign plant.

This time, the city chosen was Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where Volkswagen had already been producing automobiles and light commercial vehicles since 1951. In the beginning of its operations in August 2005, the company’s second plant outside Brazil focused on the production of three models of Volksbus chassis, mounted with subassemblies imported from the Brazilian plant in Resende. Starting in 2007, the plant began to produce the Volkswagen Constellation models.

All the products have right-hand drive, the main specification of a market that also demands front and rear brakes with ABS and an insect protector mounted on the front grill. These engineering alterations were the responsibility of the Resende plant, where the Volkswagen World Center for Development of Trucks and Buses is located.
In the first stage, the production of 700 trucks and 200 buses per year is addressed to the South African market and those of four neighboring countries: Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia. The network of South African agencies
